Trying something new
Hello everyone,
I sort of had a bit of a desire to do something new the other day, so I decided to put on a projection night.
For a few years, I’ve admired an event that runs in Sydney called ‘unfinished’. This is a night where 5 people are selected to share work in progress, speaking to a largeish audience and receiving feedback on what they are doing. I liked the structure of the event, and the call to share with a peer group. I find most creatives are often working in vacuums and people around us can only listen to so much creative obsession before we’re taking up too much space.
My girlfriend, for example, is probably sick of hearing about roadtrip logistics, fencing, dingoes, eagles and different installation methods.
So I decided, fuck it let’s try something new.
So on November 26th I’m hosting a work in progress projection night at the gallery my studio is in.
If you’re in Melbourne you can participate in one of two ways.
a) You can come along and listen, have a chat, explore the big book library I have, etc.
b) If you’re working on something you want to share, you’re incredibly welcome to speak for 5-10 minutes about what you’re working on, how it’s going, any good parts or hard parts. You’re also encouraged to have questions you want to ask the listeners, or things you’d like them to tell you.
I have a dislike for unsolicited feedback, so I’m trying to encourage people to say ‘I’m working on x, I’m stuck on y, if anyone has ideas please let me know’ and just sort of directing people’s curiosity and support a bit.
Anyway - there’s a bit more information here and if you’re keen to speak please fill out that form. I really want as many people to get involved as they can - I know public speaking isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time, but this will be a friendly and generous night. Calm, supportive and on your side.
It’s nice trying something new, something simple and something a bit for others.
Hope to see some of you there.
Matt
