Big September coming up
Hello everyone,
A quick one today to share some big things happening in September.
I am going to South Korea to be part of Seoul Publisher’s Table! My first time ever in Korea and our first fair there. I’ve managed to pre-sell books to three stores, so that pays for the flights (phew) - hoping for a Japan-level event!
I am launching ‘Nobody Knows I’m Gay’ twice this month. If you’re in Melbourne we’d love to see you at one of the two launches. If you’re interested in photography, art, queer history, queer art, lesbian subcultures and having a damn good time with damn good people please come to one of the two events I’m hosting.
This book is a collection of photographs from the 80s-90s of the lesbian community in Sydney. This was a time when the community was increasingly public and increasingly assertive, often coming into conflict with ‘moral’ crusaders, religious dickheads and judgemental wankers. The book captures C.Moore’s social activism, community spirit, warmth, humour and simmering impatience at the forces of anti-lesbian bullshit.
Reflecting on this book I can say making it really expanded my life. I have long had a lot of gay friends, but not always been so connected to lesbians in my personal life. Through this project, working with a lot of incredible people, I’ve found ways to contribute, be present, and connect with some just gorgeous people.
A friend recently labelled me ‘honorary lesbian publisher’ which, coming from a 60+ year old rough and ready bad bitch means a lot.
So come along and celebrate with us. Or, if you can’t, buy a book!
a) September 24th (Thursday, but Friday is a public holiday) at the Vic Pride Centre. Doors open at 6PM, we’re doing a talk at 6.30, and hanging out having drinks and chats until late.
b) September 26th at Museum of Australian Photography. 1.30-3.00 - this will be a more serious event with a bit more emphasis on the legacy and importance of C.Moore Hardy’s work within Australia’s art history.
I’m teaching a workshop in Sydney in November - my first one. I have two spots left, so get in now or miss out!
There is also a new book on photography exhibitions and a how to guide for sale, check them out.
Anyway, I should get back to pretending to focus on Year 11 Business Management class, but they are quietly doing work, or pretending to do work, so I can keep doing Tall Poppy Press things.
I hope your September is looking fun!
