Reiki – A Closer Look
To celebrate the introduction of our newest practitioners to Marlborough House, Yvonne Bottarelli, we thought we’d take a closer look at Reiki – and it’s many benefits (particularly for those more sceptical!).
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique that involves the hovering of hands above or on the body and is designed to promote physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The practice is based on the idea that a universal life force flows through all living beings, and that through the hands of a practitioner, this energy can be balanced within the recipient’s body. Though it has roots in Eastern traditions, it’s now practiced worldwide in a variety of contexts, from wellness clinics to hospitals.
What are the benefits of Reiki?
1. Stress Relief and Relaxation
One of the most widely reported benefits of Reiki is its ability to reduce stress. In an era where anxiety and tension are at all-time highs, people are seeking ways to calm their minds and bodies. Many people report feeling deeply relaxed after a session, and as well as the effects of the practitioner’s work, this could also be attributed to the calming touch, slow-paced environment, and focused attention—factors that all have scientifically-supported links to stress reduction.
2. Better Quality of Sleep
Many recipients of Reiki also report improved sleep quality. With rising rates of insomnia and chronic poor sleep, you may want to consider Reiki for its feeling of a meditative, peaceful state and release of stress; key features of good sleep hygiene.
3. Increased Self-Awareness
Reiki often encourages individuals to reflect on their emotional and physical states. This self-awareness can be beneficial for managing stress, identifying negative thought patterns, or understanding where tension resides in the body. If nothing else, taking time to check in with oneself is a valuable practice for mental health.
4. Supporting the Mind-Body Connection
From a scientific standpoint, there is growing recognition of the mind-body connection in health and healing. Even for those that are less inclined to believe in the spiritual side of Reiki, it can serve as a form of therapy that helps individuals tap into that connection. The practice encourages people to pay attention to how their bodies feel and how emotions affect their physical health—an insight that can lead to improved mental and physical wellness.
Is Reiki for you?
Whether you’re a spiritual person, or more sceptical, the benefits of Reiki on your mind and body are evident. Whilst many people acknowledge the importance to look after their body with a healthy diet and exercise, perhaps the focus needs to be shifted into a more holistic approach to wellness. By practicing Reiki, it adds a layer of mindfulness, relaxation, and self-awareness to your wellness routine.
