A couple writing opportunities

Apologies for two newsletter emails in two days, but I wanted to get this out there: we have two very cool projects that we want writers to know about.

Donald Ryan [author of Don Bronco’s (Working Title) Shell] is currently reading for the fall issue of Mealarkey. We have no budget for this project; it’s 100% online and 100% volunteer and also 100% fun. You need to write something about food. You can do that I bet. The window closes on September 15.

Look over the Summer Menu to get a sense of our tastes: Mealarkey Summer Menu 2025.

I am currently reading (slowly, very slowly) for next year’s Poetry EP project. Submissions will stay open until the end of the year or until I pick four EPs, whichever happens first, so there’s time but there’s also not so much time. The gist of the EP project is this: next year we’ll publish one of these poetry EPs per quarter. They won’t be for sale individually, but they will be sent out to every book club subscriber, and each quarter a new EP will get sent out with every book order. We have four books coming out next year, so each EP will get paired with one of those books and go out with all the preorders, and so on. Poets whose work we select will get $50 and a few author copies, plus copies of all the other EPs, and all four books for next year. So what is a poetry EP? Read the guidelines!

Each of these EPs will feature a different cover with an original painting by Daniel Miller.

Not a poet? Want to help us bankroll this project? For $52 you become a poetry EP patron. You’ll be thanked in each EP and get a copy of each one. Most importantly, you’ll be helping pay for the poems and the art. We are in need of six more patrons and you can take care of that right here! Note: becoming a patron means you can’t submit a poetry EP, to avoid conflict of interest and all that.

Submissions for King Ludd’s Rag are paused for the time being. Submissions for online fiction are paused kind of indefinitely; I don’t know when we’ll be able to reopen them. We either have to decide we can’t pay for online-only stories anymore or figure out how to create a sustainable budget for paying for online-only stories. In the meantime, subs are closed. Hit me up if you’re not trying to get published by Malarkey and want to give us $600 to pay for online-only stories though!

Okay, thanks for reading. We’d love to read your poems and your food-related writing so send that stuff our way!
