On Forgetting
The Long Haul
The audacity of needing to write newsletters in order to have a newsletter! It’s been a while, friends! Let’s see if I can get back in the saddle.
I have been hilariously bad on sending regular newsletters. There’s a lot I could blame this on, but it’s my own forgetfulness and imposter syndrome in the end. Keeping up to date promoting my own work is a clear and present fault of mine, and I’m sure that’s contributed to less sales/reading/engagement in the grand scheme of things. I have a guilt complex, thinking I’m “bothering” people when I send a newsletter or write a post sharing my work. I also have a terrible habit on social media that—whenever I do post something—I quickly bury my own post by reposting/reskeeting posts by others. A veritable “Would you mind looking at this? If not no worries, let me give you something better to look at.”
In any case, here I am. Better late than never.
Happy Birthday From These Dark Abodes!

September marked one year since my novella, From These Dark Abodes, published with Psychopomp. This book means so much to me, and I am astounded and grateful for the love it’s received.
I was recently reminiscing what a great experience it was to publish with Psychopomp. E. Catherine Tobler is a writer’s dream editor, and she pushed me to write and perfect my favorite scenes in the book. Melissa Ren is a publicity extraordinaire! And of course the brilliant Sean Markey, the mastermind behind Psychopomp, The Deadlands, and now Fantasy. It’s true dream team, y’all. If you have the chance to submit to and/or support them, you absolutely should.
Also, check out Psychopomp’s website for the Bone-y Anniversary post! It still looks like you can get From These Dark Abodes in ebook formate on sale for $1.99! Get to it, skeletons!
The Short Haul
I’ve been slacking on featuring excellent short fiction, but let’s get back to it. Here are some of my recent favorites across the board:
“Why We Keep Exploding” by Hailey Piper in Teenage Girls Can be Demons.
“When He Calls Your Name” by Catherynne M. Valente in Uncanny Magazine.
“Kansas” by Kate McIntyre in HAD
“Stealing Home” by Annika Barranti Klein, upcoming in Weird Horror 12. (I got to read a draft of this story so HA! You should subscribe and read the issue when it releases, because this story is stunning.)
“Garden of the Bloodpotter” by Erin Brown in Psychopomp.
A Few More Short Haul Updates
In lieu of trying to be better about promoting my work, I have a few articles forthcoming this October. Two are forthcoming from Book Riot, one breaking down the trend of sprayed edges and one listing excellent horror collections to put on your Halloween TBR. I also have my first Reactor article forthcoming (hooray!), in which I had the pleasure of writing about Carissa Broadbent’s oeuvre.
I have two pieces of fiction forthcoming: My novelette “My Mother is the Water” is forthcoming in F(r)iction, and my micro “When the Baby Sleeps” is forthcoming in Nightmare Magazine. My gratitude cup runneth over!
Finally, as we dive gleefully into October, please send luck and good vibes, as I am hoping to hear from more editors for either my novel and/or novella. Having two projects on sub is a beast of waiting agony, but we shall persist! My agent, Eric Showers, has been truly amazing in encouraging me and keeping me sane. In the meantime, I am taking advice from mentors and dear friends and focusing on new projects. Hello, fantasy romance novel! Hello, new novella!
I hope you all are staying safe and resisting during these uncertain times. I have the honor and challenge of being the co-state leader of Indiana for Authors Against Book Bans. Being involved in any way is so necessary right now.
Take care of yourselves, my lovelies.
