Woofing It

Well, the 2nd Thomas Woof Festival was a big hit. Ron Powell set up a sound system that ran itself, using fabulous music he had on his cellphone. We didn’t have to touch it the whole time. He had Hot Duck Soup and Jerry Douglas and Doc Watson on there, and much more. It attracted people to the Square who had no idea about the Festival.

The Garden Deli and Snap Dragon are closed for a couple of weeks, and disappointed customers just walked over to the square and had a good time. Several out-of-towners who weren’t looking to adopt a dog just gave us money (usually $20) to help the dogs.

I believe Yancey Humane Society had 4 adoptions, and the Mitchell Shelter had 2, so that was good. Mitchell also had their own raffle going, and ours (mostly $5 gift certificates from Burnsville businesses) raked in over $300.

Jim and his pastor, Tommy James, made announcements from the stage, and Tommy pulled the winning tickets from the mason jars set up next to the prizes. Carol Lundberg, whom I met on the library porch right after Hurricane Helene, when the library porch was the only place one could get an internet signal, bought scads of raffle tickets. She and her 3-legged dog Bear fortunately sat right near the stage, because she won a lot! (Carol was very gracious during library-porch days. Neither Jim nor I had running water, and we were getting ridiculously stinky. She invited us to her place - which thankfully did have running water - so we could shower!)

We were exhausted after Thomas Woof yesterday, and were asleep well before 10. I had a short nap today; could’ve slept all day, but had promised some people I’d come to Celo and notarize a POA and a medical POA. Of course, Jim had to drive me, and of course it turned out he knew the people.

I did accomplish a couple of things today: I blasted every joint and attachment on my porch swing chains to make the squeaking go away, and I reacquainted myself with the wussie weed eater I’d bought years ago. A new one - with wheels on it! - is on the way! Who knew there was such a thing (other than my sister who is sending it)?

Speaking of “who knew” - my calendar for Friday June 6th has penciled on it “GC’s!!” and neither Jim nor I have a clue what that means. Neither of us can recall knowing anyone with those initials, and we can’t think of a business named that, either. Forgive us if it’s you…and please remind us what it means.

I’m looking forward to a deep sleep. There’s a very gentle rain just starting - a nice lullaby!
