October 9th, I think

Yesterday, a rescue worker up from Durham found 2 dogs loose on the highway, picked them up, and took them to the fire department, where rescuers go to get assigned. Naturally, one of my neighbors was volunteering there and of course they ended up at my house. Fortunately, when I texted the shelter director, she asked me to describe them and when I did, she said their people were at her desk, filing a lost-dog report. Yay! The beagle’s toenails had obviously never been trimmed, so I did ask them to take care of that asap.

I’ve named the deaf, dumb, and blind dog Tommy. If you don’t get it, you are very, very young! Today he did get vaxxed, etc. and goes back for boosters in 3 weeks and neutering in December.

Jim’s house has power now, so he has packed out. To make it as easy as possible for Tommy, I won’t be moving any furniture again. Jim Craig, TJ’s friend from Alabama, has been super helpful and it’s interesting to hear his tales of the work he’s been doing here. He works super long hours.

We still don’t have running water, but supposedly in a couple of weeks we will - but it won’t be potable. My hands are sore from opening bottle after bottle - 16 oz. bottles - pouring them into gallon jugs I picked up from one of the many piles of goods people have been setting out on the street. (I’d thought about buying OJ by the gallon so I’d have empty jugs, but I only ever drink OJ in screwdrivers, and there’s too much to be done to imbibe what it would take.)

I bought two dishpans today, as it takes too much hot water to wash and rinse dishes in the basins of my 1920s double drainboard porcelain sink.

All over town, there are piles and piles of clothing and other goods stacked on the curb. Samaritan’s Purse (a Franklin Graham enterprise) is handing drivers boxes of hot lunches, etc. I got stuck behind cars whose drivers, like me, just needed to proceed around the square, which is on our main drag. A woman was walking out, stopping traffic to hand out food, even though she had plenty of space off to the side. I asked her to stop that, and she did.

They’re kicking us out of the library.

More tomorrow, maybe.
