Facebook and me....

….not a good match.

I think you all know I haven’t done social media for years. Well, there’s a reason why, and I remembered a few hours ago what that was.

On Saturday, Jim and I joined other delegates to the Dem’s NC District 11 convention, to vote on some resolutions and delegates to the DNC convention in Chicago this fall. It was informative and fun, and we hung out quite a bit with a candidate named Caleb Rudow, who we believe is much better suited to be our congressman than the current guy.

Caleb and his team are great, and we brought back yard signs and have agreed to informally help them get more exposure up in Yancey County. That’s where the trouble started - just for me, not Jim nor Caleb. I decided to reestablish a presence on Facebook just for the purpose of promoting Caleb.

Well. I created a new account, friended a bunch of very nice people who friended me back. Posted the snapshot of me with Caleb, and - of course - a 2018 photo of me on the couch with JodytheFosterdog, Gracie, MissEllaneous d/b/a Lil’ Bit, and Willie. Then - the reason I got off Facebook decades ago sucked me in again. I started “liking” people’s posts and memes and watching videos of weird stuff, like the umbilical cords of kittens born stuck together getting carefully cut apart.

I’d left my Fastmail account tab open, and on my other monitor had a spreadsheet I was working on.

All of a sudden, my computer went batshit crazy, with lights flashing and making “that noise” and both monitors froze; I could move the mouse thingy around (can’t remember the name for that thing that’s either an arrow or a pointing finger), but clicking didn’t do anything. I tried logging off; nope. Tried turning the computer off; nope. So I disconnected the power and went off to finish watching last night’s episode of Midsomer Murders.

So for about an hour or so, I was disconnected from the rest of the world, and when I came back I decided that I am again eschewing social media. If I friended you on Facebook, just ignore it; I’m not going back. I don’t know what I’d clicked on that scrambled my computer, and I don’t care to find out.

I’m going to send this news out via Buttondown and NewsFromParnellHill, since very few of you seem to have gotten the prior two Buttondowns.

Back to the twentieth century, where I belong…
