We're so ready for the investor demo

Can you have a 'fast follow' when it's hardware? Plus: Zen Paycheck!

This week we return to Flora’s squad AND we have another advice column from Zen Paycheck!

As a reminder, the team’s mandate is to build the world’s first AI-powered, replicant-style robot. Last time we checked in with them, their prototype was speaking like Jay-Z and looking like it was about to snart.

And now, this week’s dose of workplace Zen.

Dear Zen Paycheck,

I just started a new job and am trying to be assertive to let people know what I’m capable of and all about my extensive skill sets. I’m getting nothing but push back. People say, “that’s not how we do things around here” and “you need to get approval before you can request process changes”. It’s incredibly frustrating.

Sincerely,
Challenged Changemaker

Dear Challenged Changemaker,

I completely understand wanting to make a strong impression at your new job and that you are anxious to make your mark. Slow down a bit, get to know the corporate culture and norms. Watch closely how the various departments interact via chat and email. This will serve you well as you present your “good ideas” in the way your co-workers will receive the best.

Making a mark is important, but right now your co-workers still see you as a question mark. Just give it some time.

— Zen Paycheck

I wanted to acknowledge the recent passing of Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert. I read his comic strip in the newspaper growing up, before I really understood what it was about. Since then, his work served as a source of inspiration for Lowered Techspectations specifically and my desire to poke fun at corporate situations more broadly. Towards the end of his life, Scott Adams expressed some extremely racist views which led his syndicate to stop representing Dilbert. Although I was upset to learn this about a creator I admired, I think we are complex-enough creatures to hold both appreciation for and disappointment in a person at the same time. That’s why I wanted to reflect on him today. (Read an archive of his old strips here)

Thanks for reading, see you next sprint!
