Ratboss's critique. Plus: Zen Paycheck!

🎵 Welcome to July’s Double Feature issue! 🎵

Double feature logo text

First, let’s check in on the Beta Plane. Remember, this is the alternate dimension where Ratboss is the CEO of Strategent, they pivoted from robots to toasters, and everything is Dark UI. Clear?

Six panel comic titled "Designer Designs" where a graphic designer in the Beta Plane tries to create images acceptable to Ratboss.

And now, a question for Zen Paycheck, our advice columnist:

Dear Zen Paycheck,

I’m starting up a tech company. I’m wondering whether I should pay someone to design a logo, or if I should use GenAI. What are your thoughts?

Sincerely,

Founder-in-cheap

Dear Founder-in-cheap,

Starting up a new tech company? That's far from a Zen Paycheck, "ohmmmm, I'm just here for the money" kind of a thing. A new company is a lot of work and more money going out than coming in. But you asked, so I'll share my thoughts.

AI is the subject of much fret these days but ultimately it's just a tool that might help you do your work with a little less effort. I'm all about something else helping with my workload especially if I can just ask some questions. Give it a try. Use a variety of prompts like "be whimsical", or "be formal " or "edgy" and see what you get.

Paying a human to do the design is still a good idea but it will help if you can anticipate the first question you'll get asked: "What do you want it to look like?". If you had some AI-generated examples of what's been bouncing around in your brain, what you want, and don't want, it may move the process along.

A little more input on logos. It jambs up my RAM when I can't read a logo or have to spend much time figuring it out. Often I wish for some clear, bold and easy to read text rather than an overly creative stacked up jumble of letters I can't decode. Keep it simple and readable and remember you'll have plenty of time to revise your logo before your new company hits the S&P 500.

Until next time,

Zen Paycheck
