Listen Here #18: Mardi Gras (part 2) & Ash Wednesday
Hello dear friends,
A happy Mardi Gras and blesséd Ash Wednesday/Lent to you! Mardi Gras was wonderful this year: bright, lovely, full of vim and creativity. I danced for hours and costumed extensively. My car is full of glitter. And the resting period afterwards has been calm and restorative. If you need a recovery playlist, might I recommend my Ash Wednesday playlist? I tweak it a little every year for maximum chill.
Before we dive into songs, a little housekeeping: for the time being, I’m switching up my schedule to every other Monday. I have many, many projects in the works (including an upcoming release of The Light Set’s first recorded music in 6 years!), and I need a little extra time to do it all!
With that extra time, might I suggest that you recommend a song (or two! Or three!)? I found some new artists this week (see below), and I’d love to spend 2025 finding some more :D

This Week’s Songs:
Any song that was shared via Spotify link has been added to this public playlist for easy access. And (many thanks to Rae!) there’s also an Apple Music playlist.
Song/Artist: “Here Come The Girls” by Ernie K-Doe
Genre: Soul
Feels like: A little cheeky, a little ominous
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: I don’t know that I’ve ever listened to this song the whole way through on purpose, even one time! AND YET, I found myself singing “Here come the girls” multiple times this season on my merry way to a parade.
Other context: Here comes the girls…. Hello girls… welcome…. There they are… they are here…
Song/Artist: “Serenity” by dim figure
Genre: Lofi beats
Feels like: Transitioning from party to not-party
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: Nice little beat. Just long enough to do everything it needs to. A little birdsong in the background. I’m charmed!
Other context: This is some of the aforementioned new music I found this week. Immediate add to the Ash Wednesday playlist!
Song/Artist: “Happiness” by Franco Prisloo and Magdalena de Vries
Genre: Minimalist Marimba
Feels like: Taking a breather :)
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: I love marimba! And I love a minimalist percussive piece.
Other context: Likewise, this is some new music I found this week. Magdalena de Vries is an up-and-coming marimba player out of South Africa.
