Listen Here #14: Clap! Clap!, Telekinesis, Sault
Hello friends,
Welcome to the new week! New Orleans had 10-12 inches of snow last week, and it was magical and just so darn pretty. My pipes did not freeze, and I went for several long walks to soak it all in. At home, I bundled up, ate soup, and watched an astonishing (for me) 8 movies in 4 days. Inspired by Nosferatu (2024), my watching included Francis Ford Coppola’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula, bi-awakening classic The Mummy (1999), and am currently in the middle of Dracula (1931). Up next: Nosferatu (1922).
ANYWAYS, this is a song newsletter, not a movie newsletter — and we have three new songs to listen to today! Thank you to Mike and Madeline for sending in your recs — you can do the same ;)
Happy listening!
<3 Lauren
This Week’s Songs:
Any song that was shared via Spotify link has been added to this public playlist for easy access. And (many thanks to Rae!) there’s also an Apple Music playlist.
Song/Artist: “Kuj Yato” by Clap! Clap!
Genre: I don't even know what to call this. Tribal Global Ecstasy?
Feels like: Big Love Wildness
Loved by: Mike
Why I love this song: It lifts my spirits, it's just so positive, great groove & beat, it feels chaotic and good.
Other context: Clap! Clap! is an Italian producer. This is a conceptual album that apparently describes an intergalactic tribe trying to find a new home planet.
Song/Artist: "Dirty Thing" by Telekinesis
Feels like: Flirty, coy, upbeat, horny
Loved by: Madeline
Why I love this song: This feels like a casual love affair (that lyrically goes askew) but also like a fun start to something fresh.... plus, who doesn't want to be called a "dirty thing"?
Song/Artist: "Why Why Why Why Why" by Sault
Genre: R&B/Soul
Feels like: Slinky :)
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: All the lure and futility of an affair, wrapped up in hooky, retro soul, delivered by incredible vocalists.
Other context: Sault is an British collective of Black artists, helmed by singer Cleo Sol and producer Inflo. They're very prolific, and all their music is wonderful…the first album in particular has a real chokehold on me.
