Listen Here #13
Greetings, friends!
I’m coming to you a little late this week due to two things. One, a historical storm that is, even now, lashing at my windows. Snow! Here! I never thought I’d see the day.
I finished my storm prep last night (i.e. dragged my potted outdoor plants inside) and immediately dove into bed with a book. It was very cozy, and I hope all my New Orleans friends are likewise snug and warm.
And two, I got laid off last week. This was, to put it mildly, a bit disruptive. Thankfully, I’m alright financially for now, and while I job hunt, I’m excited to have a little extra time to work on music. Even before the layoff happened, my goal for the year was to release some songs of my own. 2025 starting off with a bang…
In the spirit of the storm, here’s a short and wintry list for this week. Next week will be more of a grab-bag, go on and recommend something!

This Week’s Songs:
Any song that was shared via Spotify link has been added to this public playlist for easy access. And (many thanks to Rae!) there’s also an Apple Music playlist.
Song/Artist: "One For Sorrow, Two For Joy" by The Innocence Mission
Genre: Folk/New-Folk
Feels like: Pure childlike love
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: It's delicate, it's beautiful, it's a meditation on winter and siblinghood. I could probably write a whole essay explicating the poetry of the lyrics. Karen Peris has the most ethereal voice, like snow drifting down from a dark sky.
Other context: The Innocence Mission is a prolific and long-standing husband-and-wife duo out of Pennsylvania. All of their albums are somehow both lush and austere.
Song/Artist: "True North" by S. Carey
Genre: Folk/New-Folk
Feels like: Gentle and drifting
Loved by: Lauren
Why I love this song: This song is so soft. I don't know how else to describe it. Like falling into a fresh, powdery bank of snow, or falling in love.
Other context: S. Carey is best known as one of Bon Iver's frequent collaborators. He's an incredible songwriter and musician. Highly recommend listening to all of his records on loop!
