[Editor’s note: This summer, I will be traveling to conferences and I have a couple of projects moving off the back burner, so the newsletter is going on summer hiatus. I anticipate returning to regular schedule when law school fires up again in mid to late August]

  • The DC Bar has published an ethical opinion on the use of GenAI by attorneys “in client matters”

  • The bipartisan working group led by Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), that held the closed-door AI forums in Congress last year, has issued a 31-page roadmap on AI regulation

  • GenAI models are getting increasingly adept at “deception” [MIT Tech Review ($) | Cell | StudyFinds]

  • A repository of judicial standing orders including AI segments

  • The Senate Rules Committee held a business meeting on Wednesday, addressing three bills devoted to AI use in elections

  • Last month, the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on the topic of election-oriented deepfakes

  • State legislatures are getting serious pushback on proposed AI legislation

  • JAMS Mediation, Arbitration and ADR Services has issued rules for disputes involving AI


Blockchain/digital currency

  • A brand new exploit against the ethereum blockchain allowed two brothers to steal US$25 million in less than 15 seconds, according to the DOJ [Ars Technica | DOJ press release]

  • Cryptocurrency regulation is getting increasingly politicized


Data Privacy

  • The Federal Trade Commission has a blog post warning car manufacturers to respect customer data collected by ‘connected cars’

  • From TechCrunch: “Waymo’s autonomous vehicle software is under investigation after federal regulators received 22 reports of the robotaxis crashing or potentially violating traffic safety laws by driving in the wrong lane or into construction zones”
