Lake Road Farm Shareholder Update
Dear friends and shareholders,
Thank you so much for participating in Lake Road Farm's dairy herdshare! 2023 was a magical year for me, a big step in a dream I've been working on for a long time. Thanks for your part in making it happen. I have a few updates about the year ahead:
- Dry season:
I expect a dry period from about mid-May to mid-July (no milk, no maintenance fees). We'll be in touch when the time gets closer. It may come sooner, or it may come later, depending. (If you want it to come later, consider picking up a milking shift while I'm on vacation :D)
- Cheese:
If you'd like to receive my "Spring Creek" soft cheese along with your milk, you can add it to your share starting in March:
- A half-wheel (1½ - 2lbs) per week, $40/month
- A quarter-wheel (¾ - 1lbs) per week, $25/month
It's a really versatile cheese that shines in salads, omelettes, enchiladas, and on pizza. If you'd like to try some, let me know and I'll include a sample with your next milk pickup.
Please let me know if you'd like to receive cheese with your milk each week. Maybe I'm biased, but I don't think you'll find a better price on cheese like this!
- Eggs:
After a devastating fox attack last Spring, my (new) flock of Icelandic hens is finally laying. (And hopefully, I'm a bit wiser.) Icelandic hens lay small-to-medium eggs. If you'd like to get some along with your milk, I can add them to your share starting in March for $15/month per dozen. (Planning things monthly will help me grow my flock accordingly -- or downsize, so thanks for considering it!)
I've had the hens contained in a coop and run since October, when I sold my mature (but off-breed) rooster. Apparently, he had been the one keeping hawks away. Since then, my Icelandic roosters have matured, so I'm planning to put the hens back on pasture in the next week or two. That means richer, more nutritious eggs for us!
- Thoughts:
I jotted down my reflections on the last year at the farm here: https://rmosolgo.github.io/farming/2024/01/18/lake-road-farm-year-in-review.html If you want to hear me talk a lot sometime, ask me more about one of the sections there...
Thanks again for supporting this work. I hope you've been enjoying the milk as much as we have. Please let me know if you have any other comments or questions as you reflect on last year's work.
Best,
Robert
