I Have No Mouth But I Must Dance
The Brainfart Chronicles
Updates & Random Thoughts
- The last month has been busy. I keep jumping around between different projects, and am finally starting to make progress on a few of them.
- The epic D&D review continues on the game blog.
- I've started outlining the post-edit rewrite of Cinemechanix. It's mostly going to be a reorganization, but there are also some rules changes (a few of which I've posted to the playtest group). Not sure what this means for the eventual release, but I have a feeling it's going to be next year.
- My second Patreon exclusive is Assault on Dungeon 13, where players take on the role of monsters defending their dungeon from adventurers. The original idea was just a reverse dungeon crawl RPG, but I decided to use a map and miniatures when I run it at cons, and that let to sort of a turf wars strategy game that happens before the adventurers show up. The game is written except for stats and I'll have to finish those up between now and DieCon since I'm running it there (I've also got to print out a bunch of cardboard minis). Josh Burnett is going to be doing art for the book.
- I watched a couple episodes of Amazon's Philip K. Dick series. They're not bad, but there's a certain EC comics quality to the "twist" endings. I'll watch the rest eventually, but it's clearly not the Black Mirror competition that Amazon was hoping for.
- Watched the revamped season 4 of Arrested Development and I think I actually preferred the original version. I kind of liked realizing that I was watching the set-up for a punchline I'd seen in an earlier episode. Season 5 came out just as I finished re-watching 4, but I haven't had time to watch enough episodes to get a feel for whether it's any good.
Con Season is Here
DieCon is next weekend and I'm getting stuff together for my games:- Assault on Dungeon 13, mentioned above
- Vanishing Blacktop, a proof of concept test for the DinerPunk idea I've been tossing around in my head for a while.
- I'm also running 2 2-hour demo games. The players will pick from several prepared options, most based on TV shows or movies. So far I've got Firefly, Avengers, and a game where characters from fantasy fiction (Conan, Gray Mouser, Arya Stark) get transported to the world of the Dungeons & Dragons cartoon. If there's time, I'll convert the League of Kick-Ass Dudes characters from last year and stat out some Buffy characters as well. I've toyed with the idea of making Arrested Development an option, but I'm not sure who that would work as a game. All the characters I've made for these are going up on Patreon and most are on the Cinemechanix playtest page.
- Leghton's going to be running late, so I'm also running BarnBots, a game based on a comic he did when he was 8 or something. It's kind of like Transformers, but with farm animals.
Six Gun Seven Art
Here are Juan Navarro's pencils for the Six-Gun Seven cover. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Word of the Week
Brainfart Press will eventually release a dictionary of words nobody particularly needs to know, tentatively titled (with apologies to Ambrose Bierce) "The Dumbass Dictionary." Here's one of those words:
Gludnortbin:
Adjective describing something that’s just so goddamn good that there’s not a word to adequately describe how good it is. Coined by Hi-Fi Ninja frontman and burger connoisseur Ronnie McCoy.
