Pleased to meet you.
Drawing my line in the crumbly sand.
Earlier at Music Minus None…
Hey there.
You might know me from an opera house, or a university, or a master class, or a summer program, or from the lil’ videos I make on porches. If you do, you know I’m a classical pianist who works mostly with singers. At least that’s been true for a long time, but things are shifting like they are for most of us in this community. Writing, which has always been something I’ve played at, is assuming a bigger place in my life. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do about that, beyond accepting each new gig with a kind of greedy surprise.
A new result requires a new action, right? Okay then: something new. In this space, I’ll be writing about music. I don’t really know what that means just yet. I’m still a performing musician and teacher, but don’t plan to write about that per se. Plenty of opera folk have suggested writing about the opera business, and I really don’t want to do that. But on this site, I’ve discovered so many writers whose work I love, and I love engaging with them in this format. And ultimately, that’s it for me - the chance to build and sustain a community in a world that feels crumbly, from inside a profession that’s clearly crumbling.
So *ahem* here I go, writing, and asking you to read it. Please do so if you are so inclined. Share it. Talk about it, here with me, and elsewhere.
Welcome!
