A Celebration of Place

My summer fermentation workshop in the woods, with zines and wild plants, is a dream come true

A quick newsletter today to announce something I am very, very excited about:

I'm leading a multi-day workshop at The Hambidge Center for Creative Arts & Sciences next month called The Magic of Fermentation: A Celebration of Place.

I hope you'll join us! BUT I also want to tell you what's so very special to me about this workshop in particular:

Years ago, I was part of a multi-day residency at Sandor Katz' home in Tennessee. It was one of the first places I felt like I could both embody my professional self and my whole self as a creative person, and shifted the trajectory of my life considerably.

Ever since then, I've had a dream of leading multi-day programs that can offer big, or little shifts like the ones I experience working with Sandor and other fermentation friends.

My first was in Atlanta with several amazing ferment friends, including Sandor Katz and Kirsten Shockey, right before COVID lockdown. But my big dream is to actually host these out closer to the natural world: and this workshop in Hambidge is my very first time doing that.

Together, we'll go over the basics of fermentation, collectively prepare and share food, go on walks in the woods and (as we find them) collect edible plants to add to our ferments, connect to the history behind our food, and make collaborative fermentation zines, which I'll compile and copy and mail out to you after.

I find so much wonder and delight in fermentation: In the way it stretches and deepens my understanding of the world, and ignites my curiosity, and practically just tastes good and makes my food last longer. I want to share that deep love with every single person who comes to this workshop.

It's the magic of fermentation, experienced through a bunch of different lenses and approaches, and I'd be honored if you could join us.

Please spread the word, and learn more + sign up at this link!

My 10 year plan is to lead these workshops, at least 1x/year each, in the South, and in Ireland (and possibly other places). A lot of the planning I do around where and how to live is based on my living space occasionally also serving as a space for education and community.
