Race day
Hi everyone
Here’s my occasion personal newsletter for people who might be interested. Feel free to unsubscribe if you aren’t interested, and to share it with others who you think might be.
My big sporting event for the year was the Sunshine Coast 70.3 Ironman (1.9km swim, 90km cycle, 21.1 km run). My training was disrupted by injury, so although I completed the event, I was very nearly the last finisher. I am in two minds as to whether I can continue over such large distances as age catches up with me. Unless my training goes a lot better, I won’t enter next year’s event.
Age is also reflected in longer recovery times (exacerbated by a bad case of hay fever and travel). Nearly two weeks after the event, I’ve done my first decent exercise (15km swim, followed by 10km run), enjoyable enough but well outside race pace.
Nancy are now in Far North Queensland, visiting our farm as well as family and friends. We are stretched too thin between FNQ, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, and need to simplify our lives. But simplification turns out not to be simple, with lots of commitments that are hard to wind down.
I mostly try to avoid travelling for work, and generally do as much as I can remotely. But I’ve signed up for visits to places where I have some history. First, going to my hometown of Adelaide for a conference on privatisation (8-9 October). Then my alma mater, the University of New England where I’m giving a lecture in honour of my PhD supervisor, the late John Dillon (15 October). And then a symposium on Valuing Life and Health in Canberra (20-22 January).
If you are would like to catch up with me on any of those, send me an email john.quiggin@icloud.com
