Catching up ...
Why you are getting this email
Hi
Like lots of us, I have trouble keeping in touch with colleagues, friends and family. There are options like Facebook, but then you are subject to their obscure systems (‘algorithms’) for deciding who will see what, with the underlying goal of serving up advertisements.
Over the last year, I’ve been using Substack to send out newsletters of different kinds. One is essentially the same as my blog, but reaches people who no longer look at blogs. Another is a (roughly) monthly newsletter, mostly about what I’ve been doing and saying that month.
Those are for anyone who wants to subscribe. Now I’m trying something a bit different, with a more personal focus, aimed at people I’d like to keep in touch with more directly. My idea is that I will send you the kind of news I would send in a personal email if I could only get around to sending it.
If you feel like responding, just email me at john.quiggin@icloud.com, and that should prod me into replying. And if you don’t want to get the emails at all, just unsubscribe.
My big news for the moment is that I am negotiating a semi-retirement from UQ. The idea is that I won’t do any more teaching, but will continue with some research and doing lots of media to keep the UQ name in front of the public. We’ll see how it works out.
I’m hoping this will give me more time both to keep up my triathlon training, to explore some new activities, and to get back to things like hiking, which I have let slide in recent years. I’d be keen to hear what you are doing, and to have your suggestions.
That’s all from me for now
Keep safe
John
