Weekly Update 29/03/2022
Good evening!
It's been a relatively quiet for me in terms of watching stuff, and I'm currently moved onto Chicago Fire having gotten up to date on all of Netflix's episodes of Chicago Med, but, but, but! There's two new queer TV series that I can absolutely and most whole-heartedly recommend:
Our Flag Means Death - Created by David Jenkins and starring Taika Waititi as Blackbeard and Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, the Gentleman Pirate, Our Flag Means Death is a queer pirate romp of a romcon and it's incredible. Season 1 is 10 episodes, there are 6+ queer characters as part of the main cast, multiple queer kisses, multiple queer romances, a canon nonbinary character who uses they/them pronouns played by a nonbinary actor, no homophobia plotlines, no coming out subplots, just purely ridiculous and delightful queer slice of life. We're talking romances, we're talking swashbuckling, we're talking fun, ridiculous fake-your-own-death plots, we're talking biting criticisms of the evils of British imperialism, we're talking slaveowners getting fucking belted again and again. It's honestly everything I need and desire out of television forevermore and I will be kissing David Jenkins directly on the mouth as soon as he makes himself available.
Severance - Created by Ben Stiller (of Night At The Museum fame) and Aoife McArdle, Severance is a sci-fi thriller based around a dystopian/modern-day horror premise. It's centred around workers on what is known as a Severed floor - workers undergo a surgical procedure to formally "sever" the mental and emotional connection between their working selves and their at-leisure selves. The people they are on the job have no memory or awareness of their lives outside of working hours, and on days off, they have no memory of their time at work. It's a really, really interesting show that's digging into a lot of ideas around cybernetic advancements and also workers' rights, and what I'm loving most about it is that it's effectively a TV show where almost the entirety of the main cast are exhibiting symptoms of moderate-to-severe brain damage both in and outside of work. Moreover, it also has an unbelievably tender love story between two of the older working guys, played John Turturro and Christopher Walken, and as you guys know, I'm a sucker for old dudes in love. There's seven episodes of S1 out so far, and they're still coming out each week at the moment!
Onto...
