Weekly Update 20/02/2021

Good afternoon!

Finally, finally, I am dragging my way out of my winter depression hole for the time being, and have been able to start to get on top of my work again, which is wonderful and glorious! Unfortunately, my old laptop finally died today, which means that I have a lot of drafts I can't currently access and will have to get recovered, so everyone cross their fingers and hope I'm able to do so, haha.

The past few weeks I've been playing the Hades game on PS4 a lot, and if you haven't gotten around to playing it yet, I absolutely recommend it! It's so well-written and had such a huge array of fascinating characters, it does some really fun stuff with its retelling of different Greek myths, and there's so much queerness in it, it's a pure delight. I've also been playing Beyond Blue, which is a much shorter game based off of the Blue Planet series, and it's a first person POV undersea exploration game with a big focus on different marine species, especially different sharks, cetaceans, squid, and fish found in coral reefs, and it's beautiful and very calming to play.

Some other media I've enjoyed the past two weeks includes:

  • The Yin Yang Master (2021, dir. Li Weiran) if you love beautifully appointed fantastical dreamscapes and VERY attractive wizards doing mischef. It's funny, it's cute, and it's a fun adventure with lots of hot dudes.

  • River's Edge (2018, dir. Isao Yukisada) if you're in for a real trip - high school students in the 90s dealing with big trauma, eating disorders, exploring identity and attempting to cope with unhealthy sex and BDSM, attempted murder, successful murder, homophobia, weird attitudes around death and relationships, and probably a dozen other things I'm not even thinking of. It's awful, and so heavy, but it really spoke to me a lot, especially a lot of the stuff around unhealthy sexual dynamics with adults, and the teenage trauma experience of dissonance with appearances versus experiences. It's great.

  • In & Out (1997, dir. Frank Oz) if you want stupid gay nonsense, which is exactly what this is, and I loved and adored it. Kevin Kline is a hot English teacher who doesn't know that he's gay despite ticking off every other gay stereotype until he's outed by a clueless ex-student who assumes he's already out at the Oscars, and then he goes on a journey of self-discovery that includes kissing a moustacheless Tom Selleck. It parodies so much of Hollywood's faux-serious commentary on gay identity while playing so much with stereotypes and the everyday person's "well-meaning" homophobia in small towns, and it's just a delight.

  • Pride & Prejudice (2005, dir. Joe Wright) is just the Keira Knightley P&P. I hadn't seen it before, and I enjoyed it.

  • Inside A Cult - Gender Critical (Part 1: Recruitment) is a big deep dive by Caelan Conrad into gendercritical and other anti-trans activists and bigots' tactics and ideologies, doing a great deal of analysis and similar, and they're so catty while being so unbelievably calm, collected, and knowledgable, and I'm just loving the depth of the focus and the analysis of how these groups function. Definitely worth a watch.
