Weekly Update 15/03/2022
Good evening!
It's been a great and wonderful week and I have lots of new stuff published, and a pretty wide variety, too!
Media-wise, this week I have been enjoying many things, but especially Disco Elysium - it's a videogame, it's pretty short, and I can't recommend it enough! It's a game about mental illness, addiction, the difficulty of rebuilding your life when you've hit rock bottom, communism, and the impossible allure of a sarcastic sexy bastard with implacable eyebrows named Kim Kitsuragi. It's genuinely one of the funniest games I've ever played, it's so well-written, and so real and relatable from a mental illness POV, and just... Yeah. Big, big recommend.
I also watched Whiplash (2014, dir. Damien Chazelle) and if you enjoyed Secretary (2002), I hugely recommend it - ostensibly, it's a movie about jazz, but shot like a sports movie. For my money, it's a BDSM movie and it's very blatantly about repressed homosexual desire whether the director is aware of this or not. J.K. Simmons in this is a middle-aged old hottie into jazz that says a million homophobic slurs per minute, and I will eat my hat if he isn't fucking dudes when he isn't fucking them over. This entire movie is about the hotly charged relationship between Simmons' character and a 19-year-old recent addition to his jazz band, who he pushes extremely hard to improve, and the kid frequently provokes him back and rises to meet the challenge. It very much hits many of the same emotional beats as Secretary, and it's very sexy and wonderfully brutal.
