Will We Ever Have General AI?

“AI” is a buzzword right now…hyped as a replacement for writers (no), but also doing real work in meteorology, in medicine.
But what we are calling AI is correctly referred to as “machine learning algorithms.” It’s artificial, but what it isn’t is intelligent.
ChatGPT, for example, is little more than a far more sophisticated version of the autocorrect in your phone. While these algorithms “learn” and respond to “rewards,” Hydi the horse is much more actually intelligent than they are…mostly because she can decide that instead of cantering nicely around the arena she’s going to stop and eat grass.
