The Rise and Slow Decline of Received Pronunciation

Hands up who can think of an actor who works with their accent? Unless your accent is California, generic Midwest or, for Brits, received pronunciation (the “Queen’s English), you might have to think some.
Until recently, I wouldn’t have counted many hands. Thankfully, things have changed. But when we discuss representation, we don’t typically talk much about accents and dialects.
If we do, it tends to center around AAVE in the U.S. Now, that conversation is an incredibly important one to have, but accents are part of everyone’s identity.
