Purgatory?

A dusty desert street. On the far side is a two storey building labeled "Longhorn Restaurant" and a small shack labeled "Tombstone Photo Studio." Two men dressed as cowboys are walking down the middle of the street.

Wynonna Earp 1.1 "Purgatory"

I was very much a Buffy fan. I can't rewatch it now I know just how much of a jerk Whedon is.

Wynonna Earp is very much in that tradition...but not. Wynonna is, for one thing, older than Buffy Summers (and very CW good looking). The basic concept: Wyatt Earp left a curse. The oldest child in each generation, when he or she turns 27, triggers the curse, which wakes up everyone he ever killed as a revenant. Oh, and the ones his heirs killed too, so better be careful with that gun.

The opening scene includes a really nice celerity effect. Unfortunately, we appear to be in Tombstone, Vancouver. Sorry, I've been to Arizona. That is a long way from Arizona.

Wynonna has come back to town for a funeral, but she's a Constantine-level screwed up strong female character. Which I like. I'm a huge fan of female characters being allowed to have male character flaws such as drinking too much, having PTSD, and being a loose cannon.

She is doing the entire reluctant hero thing, but really can't. Also, there's the law...and now she has a deputy badge.

This is not a traditional western...her "horse" is a motorcycle...but it does have enough of the feel of one to be enjoyable.

Wynonna has to send the Revenants back to Hell, and she specifically has to use Wyatt's gun to do it.

In a town that is, of course, called Purgatory.

As a note, all the Earp kids having W names, who would do that to their kids? Answer, an older generation of my husband's family which featured Lois, Larry, and Laurel. Thankfully nobody continued the tradition or I might be married to a guy named Lester...

Wynonna Earp 1.2 "Keep The Home Fires Burning"

She told him she needed to use Peacemaker. She told him. Listen to your local expert, Mr Big City Fed Man.

The revenants are really screwed up, but honestly summoning something even worse? That's not a good move. Setting it on Waverly? Really not a good move. Poor Waverly...guess who was tricked into breaking the homestead's wards as a child, by an imaginary friend named Bobo.

That has to be the big bad with a name like that. Oh wait, he is. He's not above torturing his own people to, well...is it death when they aren't alive. And apparently their goal is not so much to defeat Wynonna as escape Purgatory.

Which doesn't seem like that bad a place, really? Even if it is still looking a lot like Vancouver.

This show is good, but it also kind of struggles as it swings across the line between modern urban fantasy and western. And why does the homestead have no animals? A pet cemetery. No animals.

This show needs a heroic, adorable dog.

Wynonna Earp 1.3 "Leavin' On Your Mind"

Nice yell at the screen moment in this one.

It's nice to watch something which reminds me of Buffy, but doesn't involve Whedon. Also, the twisting of the "Hero uses a sword for some BS fantasy reason" into "Hero uses an ancient six shooter..." I like it.

So, the revenants are trying to escape by hiding in living bodies. Makes sense, in its own way.

And dangit, you aren't supposed to...well...lets just say somebody dies who probably shouldn't.

And yes, that is Doc Holliday. Don't trust him. Not that she should be trusting Dolls either...he's a rat bastard. But...

Maybe just trust Waverly?

Wynonna Earp 1.4 "The Blade"

So, most of these revenants are basically reskinned vampires with a different way to kill them. But this time, they find one that can teleport through mirrors...and demands his victims beg for forgiveness from the person they hurt the most.

I really wanted this to end with Wynonna realizing the person she has hurt the most is herself.

We do discover Waverly wishes she was the heir. She should be smart and understand that's not what she wants.

And Doc apparently sold his soul...but I'm still not sure I don't trust him more than Dolls. I don't trust either of them that much.

(Although based on the flashback, I wonder if Doc made a promise to Wyatt to watch over the Earp heirs and help them out, even if Wyatt died mad with him. Especially if Wyatt died mad with him).

It is very weird that there are no animals in this western riff. Did I already say that? Yeah, I did. It's still weird.

Wynonna Earp 1.5 "Diggin' Up Bones"

We bury some gays this week. I'll give them a pass for now, in the hope that there are going to be more gays that don't get buried.

But it seems not all of the revenants are hopelessly evil. Surprise surprise. (Part of why I'll give a pass is them using the gay guys to demonstrate this).

And the Stone Witch...who is she? Apparently she's the entity Doc sold his soul to. Or...something.

Wynonna, of all the people you could f- in this show, you pick that one? No taste, woman. No taste.

Cryderman is an interesting name for a judge. A probably corrupt judge.

Make that a definitely corrupt judge.

Not sure I trust anyone. Waverly. Maybe Waverly.

But this is about to get much more interesting morally.
