Fiction for Social Change – Why We Shouldn’t Be Writing For “Grandma”

An old clapboard house painted a pleasant yellow, with shuttered windows facing a slanting street.

So, ridiculous take on social media – I should only write things that would not offend the “average elder” and should think about whether I would show my work to “grandma.” That fiction should not make waves.

One of my grandmothers was a religious nut who wouldn’t read fiction at all because “Lies are of the devil.” The other, supposedly, had a collection of horror novels. I say supposedly, because she died when I was 13, and she didn’t let the precious preteen anywhere near them because they were, I’m told, too intense for most adults.

That aside, fiction has always made waves. Let’s talk about a few authors who intentionally set out to do so…and these aren’t books we now think of as particularly “woke.”
