Disaster movies are fun. They’re a form of schadenfreude. At least you’re not that guy, right?
Earthquakes are something that’s often used in disaster fiction. It’s a convenient catastrophe that’s usually nobody’s fault. (Usually. In science fiction, sometimes you can find a way to blame a villain).
They’re also a big part of what makes Earth the planet it is. Earthquakes are caused by plate tectonics, and plate tectonics keep a planet dynamic and encourage evolution.
