Drift Compatible...Dragons?

A white boat with a blue dragon figurehead berthed in a harbor.

Review: So Let Them Burn by Kamilah Cole

Apparently, mecha that bond with their pilots is…a fashion now? Although, unlike in Moonstorm, the mecha aren’t the focus here. Dragons are.

Except we have drift compatible dragonriders now. Kind of. I’m still letting my reaction to Moonstorm (which I read earlier this year), Heavenly Tyrant, and this book percolate. The patterns are interesting.

Both Moonstorm and Heavenly Tyrant are Asian-flavored. So Let Them Burn is Caribbean-flavored. Not set in the actual Caribbean, but set on an island that feels like the Caribbean. It’s not a surprise to find out Cole is Jamaican.

This is a story of gods that mean well but can’t be trusted, dragons that likely can’t be trusted either, but above all it’s a story of the insanity of power.

There’s a second volume coming at some point and be warned that this one does not stand particularly well alone…it ends on almost a cliffhanger. Maybe one book got too long?

However, I have to forgive the author that. She weaves an interesting tale of magic, intrigue, dragons, and absolutely zero hint of any love triangles.

(Moonstorm is also love triangle free. Are we finally done with that trend?)

There is romance, mind, and it matters, but takes second fiddle to the story…which is, yes, about the insanity of power but also about how easy young people are to manipulate. This book warns the young reader about charming adults on many of its pages.

But also. Dragons.

Recommended for people who like dragons.
