Canada, But Not Quite

A green mountain pokes up into heavy cloud cover.

The Handmaid's Tale 3.5 "Unknown Caller"

Serena arranges a trip to Toronto to meet with Luke and Nichole in a safe, public space. And doesn't try to snatch her, even.

She turns down another offer of escape. Serena, you are not a smart woman.

Worse, Fred now talks her into making a public plea for Nichole's return, and June is forced to stand there in the background looking pretty.

And this is after she confesses her affair with Nick to Luke. Now, if they'd really wanted Nichole back, threatening June might have worked.

Maybe.

Luke's never going to be convinced she's part of this attempt to get him to give Nichole back. Never. He knows her better than that, even if he's likely...well...furiously jealous of Nick.

The Handmaid's Tale 3.6 "Household"

First of all, nobody can get the DC Metro right. In this case, they replace Union Station with a peculiar "modern" edifice which doesn't particularly work, but we hear announcements that include "Mind the gap."

DC has no curved platforms. There is no gap to mind. They managed to get it wrong without even doing a scene in it.

They DO get some other stuff right, although I can't imagine that you really could turn the Washington Monument into a giant cross without it toppling over. Maybe the arms are very light?

Waterford directly quoting from the Quiverfull Movement was...amusing. Especially as it might have upset them. Or not. Some of those types aspire to Gilead.

June discovers that Nick is much more of a true believer than she thought and Nichole's fate hangs in the balance.

June, you should have named her Holly in the end, it might have taken them longer to find her...

The Handmaid's Tale 3.7 "Under His Eye"

Things are complicated between Canada and Gilead, with a very real risk that Emily will be extradited...and executed...

Meanwhile, June manipulates the mentally ill and agoraphobic Mrs. Lawrence to try and get to see Hannah at her "school for the domestic arts" shudder. Or is she the one doing the manipulating. Commander Lawrence is also refusing to do the ceremony because, heresy in Gilead, he doesn't want kids.

Oh, and June's evil walking partner betrays her, gets at least one resistance Martha killed, and now the McKenzie's...and Hannah...have disappeared, likely to another "district."

Serena is making up with Fred, but...well...we don't think that's going to last.

The Avengers 2.5 "Mission to Montreal"

It's possible this episode was a script they didn't use for season one, because Steed is partnered with Dr. King, played by Jon Rollason, and the original season one partner was Dr. Keel.

Is this a bottle episode? It takes place entirely on a ship at sea, as they escort an alcoholic film star to Montreal...a film star who is couriering a dangerous microfilm. Her body double has already been killed...

Carla Berotti was played by Patricia English, who's real name was Patricia Shippam. Why English? Because she was born in Detroit!

She, alas, had a short career. Like many women of her generation she gave up performing on her marriage.

But that's a side note. This was a very strange episode. When I say "is it a bottle episode" there's one and a half sets plus stock footage...but the sets concerned aren't ones normally used for the show. Were they reused from something else?

I felt really sorry for Carla, the film star, who was a bit of a Marilyn Monroe-like figure with a secret marriage and everything. But that was a lot of alcohol she was putting away!

A bit less goofy than some of the episodes, too.
