Review: Law of Vengeance by Dusk Peterson

This is one of those writing exercises...I suspect Peterson started by writing one scene from Carle's point of view.

And then it got away from him. Law of Vengeance overlaps with earlier books, but shows a very different perspective. It turns a near villain into a sympathetic character (although one still can't forgive him for some of the things he does. There's sympathetic and then...

Again, it shows improvement in the writing. And an exploration of how people really can be so similar they end up hating each other.

Many of us have been there at some point in our lives.

The plot is straightforward, but it's about, really, controlling one's urges. All of them. And what happens when we don't...whatever the urge is.

(Oh, and poor Peter).

Review: Breached Boundaries by Dusk Peterson

I'm not a huge fan of the rightful heir trope. In part because I can typically spot it in chapter one...and this book is almost 600 pages.

Peterson does, at least, write it very well. The plot might be predictable, but the characters and worldbuilding are deft. I didn't mind spending that many pages in the company of Serva, even if I occasionally wanted to yell at the page because, well...she's oblivious to so much.

I'm also finding the music stuff a little hard to buy. It's not quite to even the cat doesn't buy it levels, but...that's not the only bit of worldbuilding that's slightly off, but I find it hard to believe that only the people who find music sacred have music and like it. Sorry, that's...not how things work.

Music is far too much of a human universal for that to make sense.

That said, it's well written enough and even though its not my favorite, I got some enjoyment out of it.

And if you love the rightful heir trope, you'll probably really enjoy it.
