Beyond Rockets - Alternative Ways to Get to Orbit

I've probably mentioned more than once that I'm a sucker for a good space elevator story. And space elevators are an engineering problem. We know how to build one, we have all the math, we just don't quite have the materials science down (plus a couple of other problems I'll be noting later).
Right now, we get out of the gravity well using chemical rockets. We haven't found anything better. Can that change? Is that really the best way to do it?
Let's look at some other possibilities.
