Beautiful People

A statue of a woman on a chaise longe, accompanied by a large bird - a goose or swan.

Wynonna Earp 3.1 "Blood Red And Going Down"

So, here's a thing I give this show a lot of kudos for.

Wynonna gives up her baby...and doesn't just carry on like nothing happened. In fact, Doc is clearly not in a great place either.

She responds to it by being driven, not sleeping, training extra hard.

And then the vampires show up. They are, of course, helping Bulshar. And they can enthrall anyone. Except, apparently, Wynonna...presumably because she's the heir.

They're also wanting to recruit Doc.

And now we know where mama is. In jail or, more accurately, secure mental. Which Waverly didn't know.

We end on a cliffhanger with a car crash...we know Wynonna is going to be okay, but...

The Beauty 1.1 "Beautiful Pilot"

Okay, so...this is an interesting venture. I read and very much enjoyed The Beauty in comic form (and am enjoying the new series that they managed to sell, to a different publisher, likely on the strength of this option).

It's even rougher on the screen. This is a show that pulls zero punches and earns its TV-MA rating. I don't even know if I can do content warnings without spoilers. Just know that it's body horror, it's about what people will do in pursuit of beauty.

It's gory, it's sexual, it's physically attractive and physically disgusting at the same time.

(All the episode titles begin with "Beautiful," which is a conceit that always amuses me).

I'm curious to see where they go...they made a major change from the comics that I'm still mulling over.

The Beauty 1.2 "Beautiful Jordan"

This episode is kind of an interlude. Jordan and Cooper are traveling the world investigating Beauty-related deaths.

In the comic book, the premise was "What if there was an STD people actually wanted to get?" with the twist being that it could still kill you. The showrunner here admits he's more concerned with diet culture.

But Jordan and Cooper have a long talk about sex, right before Jordan gets infected, because of course she does.

It's a natural consequence of sleeping around. This kind of...mutes the theme of the original, and I admit I liked it better in the comic. I'm still enjoying the show, though.

Also, Jordan is not happy.

It would be interesting to explore body dysphoria stemming from this kind of transformation, wouldn't it..

The Beauty 1.3 "Beautiful Christopher Cross"

Jordan is missing. Cooper is ordered back to New York.

And poor Jeremy...he's now the target of an assassin because, well, they don't want a drug that would be really expensive being spread around as an STD. Typical big pharma.

Well, except the assassin ends up recruiting him instead.

And yes, the treatment can keep you young forever. If you don't explode. And in this version, you can catch it through any bodily fluid, so an explosion infects a bunch of people.

This is a mess. A real mess. (The Christopher Cross reference is about how people don't respect anyone who isn't conventionally attractive).

I wouldn't want to live in a world in which everyone was!

Wynonna Earp 3.2 "When You Call My Name"

It's a western...so there must be cannibalism. As far as I know, the guy's name isn't Donner.

The car crash turns out to be a trap. Wynonna is hallucinating her mother, or is she? It's not clear what's going on there, but she has to climb a cliff without Waverly. The revenant ends up in his own trap.

Nicole has to go down the cliff to get Peacemaker, leaving Wynonna unarmed to deal with a demon that's basically the Flash.

And Dolls is dead.

I don't believe this for one second, even if there is a body. It's that kind of a show. But he could actually be dead.

I'm not gonna look at how many episodes the actor is in to find out.
