Ancient Egyptian...Runes. Also, Spiders

A large metal sculpture of a spider. In the woods.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man 1.1 "Amazing Fantasy"

I'm a bit of a connoisseur of Spider-Man shows. This one starts...iffy. Changing Peter's origin story is great, but they do it in a way that skips "With great power comes great responsibility."

Maybe that will come later, but... This obviously isn't 616. Doctor Strange shows up through a portal and the spider falls through it. So, yeah...

This does allow for a bit of a fresh start Peter. He's a freshman in high school, he's making friends, and he has the Parker Luck for sure. It just feels like its a bit sideways to what Spider-Man is supposed to be.

Nice voice work and they do some fun stuff with modern technology. But I don't like the costume. Come on, people, what's with the costume?

It just doesn't quite feel like Spidey to me, although people less versed in the lore might not be as bothered.

Cinema Disaster: Avenging Guardians

AKA Avenging Force: The Scarab. Not to be confused with Avenging Force, which is a commando movie.

This is a terrible superhero movie by way of ancient aliens. Or maybe an ancient aliens movie with superheroes. Put it this way, the credits use Hubble photos. Which are free.

One actor is only seen on a screen, making me wonder if they could afford to fly him to the set.

Everyone in this movie seems bored except the actor playing Red, who seems terrified...and not in character...and the villain, who is leaving lots of tooth marks all over the scenery.

There are some major audio balance issues here, especially with the opening narration, which was barely audible over the background music.

Oh, and it involves ancient Egyptian...runes.

Yes.

Runes.

Not ruins.

Runes.

Redeeming qualities? Some funny lines, and actually pretty decent fight choreography.

The Avengers 2.25 "Six Hands Across a Table"

Poor Cathy. She just can't catch a break...this was supposed to be her weekend off, but of course there's a murder.

(A week in a country house without one, though?)

This episode focuses on the British shipbuilding industry, which was...somewhat in decline at this point, including on Clydeside, and on unions...and manipulation of unions.

Let's use strikes to take our rivals out of business. That seems...rude. Reverse scabbing? I dunno.

We get some very tired British supremacism in this episode. And its portrayed as not necessarily a good thing, which might be a little bit of a surprise in a British spy show!

But still.

Poor Cathy.

The Avengers 2.26 "Killer Whale"

Why is Steed wasting his time with low level tax evasion? Maybe he got bored? The topic of this episode? Ambergris smuggling.

Oh, and boxing. Cathy is, of course, completely qualified to manage a boxer because she teaches judo...which are the same thing, right? More or less. (Cathy can do anything, but that's a bit of a stretch).

Given this show is episodic, the season ends with no ending, although there is a comment about "last of the line" that might just break the fourth wall very slightly.

But really, the season finale is the episode with the lowest stakes (except for the people who die, of course)?

Seems weird to me...

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man 1.2 "The Parker Luck"

Peter's grades earn him an internship with Osborne. He doesn't know better. (His friend tries to warn him, but even that's based off of vague suspicion).

And, of course, his first day he's late because nobody told him to arrive early and then during his break, a building catches fire.

Hilarity ensues as Spider-Man fights an arsonist while attempting to rescue a variety of critters from a pet shop...but his poor friend has to go to the party without him and he's late back from his break.

AND he got caught by Oscorp cameras changing, so now Osborne knows who he is. This isn't good.

I loved the parade of Marvel science types in the lab, though.
