A Grab Bag - Family and Violence

A cluster of skyscrapers seen from the deck of a large boat or small ship, with all kinds of ropes. The water between is calm but gray.

Andor 1.2 "That Would Be Me"

As the dragnet closes, Cassian prepares to get out of dodge while remembering what happened on Kanari.

(Or part of it, things must have gotten even worse).

The overzealous investigator is determined to catch him and make an example of him over a fight he didn't, after all, start. ACAB?

I am liking the feel of this...it has all of the weird low to high tech superposition one associates with Star Wars.

Wizards of Waverly Place 2.18 "Hugh's Not Normous"

Hugh discovers he's not just adopted but, horror of horrors, human. He runs away from home and hides in Alex's room.

This episode deals with adoption in such an overly simplistic manner that it's almost offensive. Hugh meets his birth parents, they hit it off, the end.

Ask any adoptee how often it really happens that way.

I get that its a sitcom, but...yeah. (Hugh is also taller than his parents, maybe from eating giant food?)

Adoption is a serious and complex issue. Especially interracial adoption, which is being riffed off of here. I struggled even to mock watch this one.

Daredevil 1.3 "Rabbit in a Snowstorm"

Desperate and hungry, Matt and Foggy take on a case they know might be a bit iffy...the case of a guy who got into a fight in a bowling alley and won it a bit too thoroughly.

This case is leading to Kingpin, I can smell the guy. The crimelord hires them because they're new and, thus, clean pretty much automatically. Makes sense to me.

And they really did need the money. Speaking of needing the money, Karen's former employers are now offering her a substantial bribe to stay quiet.

Of course, she's not going to take it...

Wizards of Waverly Place 2.19 "Don't Rain on Justin's Parade - Earth"

Justin's favorite incompetent weatherman is in danger of being fired for his inaccurate (and overdramatic forecasts).

Justin decides to fix this by magicking the weather to match the forecast and pisses off a very punk Mother Nature.

(The show shows its age by recommending CFLs rather than LEDs).

Meanwhile, Alex asks Laritate to be her career day mentor and turns good. Temporarily. It was never going to last.

Harper has found a way to get out of career day. Which appears to be for all ages again; what's with that?

Daredevil 1.4 "In the Blood"

Fisk is not above a bit of physical violence, especially when somebody ruins his date with the lovely Vanessa. They did a good job with Fisk visually - he's an exaggerated character in the source material and that had to be balance with the needs of live action.

Claire is beaten up and abducted. It doesn't slow her down. Everyone's getting beaten up.

Well, except Karen, who ends up spending several thousand dollars of the practice's money on second hand office equipment as part of her cover trying to go after Allied Union.

I mean, they kind of needed the equipment and it was probably a good deal, but...

Fisk wants to make Hell's Kitchen better. We know what he really means, don't we.
