18 Storey Indigenous High Rises – the Myth of the Noble Savage

Land back? It’s the latest controversy…restoring indigenous sovereignty over parts of this country. It’s also happening in Canada, and what inspired this blog post is happening in Vancouver.
It’s called Sen̓áḵw and it’s a high density housing development in Vancouver. With 6,000 units (250 of them set aside for members of the Squamish people) it will be the densest in the city. With sovereignty, the Squamish have not had to obey normal zoning laws.
It’s pissing off the wealthy white people next door. Some people are complaining the design is ugly (legitimate if you agree – I don’t). But the 10.5 acre development will feature 7.5 acres of public space, restaurants, fitness centers, a large grocery store, daycare, pavilions for cultural events, shaded outdoor spaces under a bridge and a new transportation hub.
