Happy 2019 (Plus a new story from Jeanne!)

Wishing you a very magical 2019, full of peace, joy, and laughter!

My year was ushered in with the happy news that I won the Society of American Archivists' 2018 Archives Short Fiction Contest. The call was for a story under 3,000 words that included an archivist, archives, or archival materials. Luckily, I had a story that was almost perfect - I just had to cut about 1,000 words. Having to cut so many words can be really good for a story. It makes you figure out exactly what you need - forces you to distill it down to only include the crucial elements.

My story, Quarantine, was selected as the winning story out of 30 entries.

They even gave me the opportunity to create a graphic to be included both online and when the story is published in the SAA magazine, Archival Outlook in January. I am really pleased by how it turned out.

“It isn’t stealing if no one cares about it anymore,” Eleanor announced to the room cluttered with old tech. “And talking to yourself isn’t a sign that you’re a crazy old lady.”

Eleanor hitched a bag bursting with arcane wires and metal equipment onto her shoulder and wove her way through the close-set shelves of the Academy’s tech recycling warehouse. At the door, she took a deep breath and peered out. For now, the campus was still empty of quarantine enforcement.

The entire story is available to be read online for free. I would love to know what you think of it!

You still have time to order your own copy of the 2019 calendar I created featuring my photographs. These are the images I chose for the month of January:

January Calendar Page 2019

The large image was taken across the street from my office building in downtown DC after a brief rainstorm - the oil-slicked water trapped in a small pothole between bricks and pavement a few inches from the curb. The upper right orange and pink photo is of a bit of brick wall with peeling paint spotted on a side street in Amsterdam. The lower right purple flower is from a clematis vine growing on a trellis in front of a house in my neighborhood in Maryland.

I think I changed my mind about five times when selecting this particular set of images. This final version pleased me with the juxtaposition of shapes and colors.

The sooner you order a calendar, the sooner this could be hanging on your wall.

Thank you for your interest in my creative ventures!
