OoOoOoOo... October Updates...!! Events And More!!

Hello, and welcome to my October newsletter!! I’m incredibly stoked for Zine Machine tomorrow!
I mentioned in my last newsletter that unless another event popped up on the horizon, Zine Machine would be my last event of the year. Well, another event did pop up on the horizon, so I am also going to be bringing my comics and prints to The November 15th flART Market at ArtPost!!
INOSCULARUM UPDATES

I have been blasting my way through Inoscularum lately! At the time of last month’s newsletter, I had penciled out 28 of the 46 pages in chapter 1. Now, I’m on page 40 of 46! I am so close to starting the inking process, and I’m crossing my fingers that this will be done by spring of next year. I’ve outlined/ scripted up through chapter 6, and it almost feels like the characters are writing the story for me! It’s a great feeling.
My aim is to thumbnail chapter 2 while I’m inking chapter 1, then pencil and ink chapter 2 while I’m posting my backlog of chapter 1 over on Comicfury, and have that be my workflow for all of my chapters going forward. I’ll also print each chapter as its own self-contained issue to take to events, for anyone who doesn’t want to read it a page at a time.

In making chapter 1, I’ve also embarked on the intimidating (to me, at least) process of making a two-page spread!! Luckily, I use paper that has helpful guidelines, and even instructions for how to make a two-page spread, printed around the edges. Honestly, the most difficult aspect of this was drawing such HUGE pictures! I haven’t drawn people at this scale since my college life drawing classes. Well, I dove in and gave it my best shot. That’s all anyone can do!
STAMP CARVING

Something I do for fun is stamp carving! Over the past couple of months, I’ve made some fun new stamps and stamped out some nice prints with them. I’ll be selling some of these prints at Zine Machine tomorrow and at the flART market next month!
I am someone who is very reluctant to sell my originals, because it kind of feels like selling one of my own children. The whole experience of selling my originals was soured for me at an art market in 2018 when someone picked up a drawing I was selling and said, “Oh my god!! I want fifty!!” Now, I realize they didn’t say this with any intent to demean me or whatever, so I just smiled and said “Thanks,” but what I really thought was, “You can’t have fifty. You can’t even have two.” Nothing bums me out quite as much as rampant consumerism, and the thought that someone could buy something carelessly and not really cherish it.
But stamp prints are a little bit different! The patterns I make with them are original one-offs, but the stamps themselves are something I’ll always have. So, I’m a bit more okay with selling them.

SOME OTHER STUFF!

Here are some drawings I did of Willem DaFoe in The Lighthouse! I really love that movie, and not just because I’m someone who really loves lighthouses. But the epic Fresnel lens in this movie does play a part in my enjoyment of it.
And now, of course, it’s time for the song of the month!! this time, it’s What Ever Happened To Saturday Night from the original cast recording of The Rocky Horror Show, the play that The Rocky Horror Picture Show is based on. I just like this song, and this recording of it in particular, and I always find myself wanting to listen to Rocky Horror songs around Halloween. In the original play, Meat Loaf played both Eddie and Dr. Scott, and he was kind of bummed that he didn’t get to also do that in the movie.
END OF OCTOBER NEWSLETTER
Well, that’s all for now, folks! I hope you have a great Halloween, and until next month, don’t forget to take some time to go outside and look at the moon. We’re all looking at the same one! The next full moon will be on Wednesday, November 5th.
