THE UPDATE
Do you ever feel like you have too much to do but also don’t want to do anything? That’s where I often feel like I’m at these days. Just so much I want or need to do but, damn, I just want to ignore all that and watch Ted Lasso.
Often, what I find helps is just getting started. I start to do something and, hey, I do it. It’s not as difficult or time-consuming as I thought it would be and now it’s done.
Other times, I need to just stop and think about the steps I need to take to get something done. Once I’ve got a plan, I can take it in steps.
Those are my strategies but I still find myself playing a game or watching TV instead of working on my list. I just have to assume that sometimes that’s what my brain needs.
EATING / COOKING / BAKING
I made hummus for gaming a couple weeks ago. I used cashews instead of tahini. The result was delicious because I did say hummus. I really should do that more often.
READING
I recently finished Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse, the sequel to her novel Black Sun. They are both great. I’m pretty sure I’ve talked about Black Sun before but, spoilers, here we go again.
The series is set in a fantastical world inspired by pre-columbian civilizations of the Americas and involves a lot of gods, mythology, and magic. As with most of these things, though, it’s the characters that draw you in. And, at least for me, the world-building.
The main characters in the books are:
Serapio, a young man who has been molded from birth to embody the Crow God reborn. He’s been trained and given a mission and, oh boy, it’s a doozy.
Xiala, a young woman and sailor outcast from her people but also seen as different from those around her because she comes from a “mythical people” of all women islanders.
Naranpa, the Sun Priest, who began as a poor common woman but rose to become the most powerful of the Watchers.
There are a ton of other great characters too but instead of reading me list them, you should just check out the books.
I’ve been a fan of everything Rebecca Roanhorse since reading her book Trail of Lightning and she just keeps getting better.
WATCHING
For All Mankind season 3: pretty good. It’s the 90’s and everyone is going to Mars! By everyone, of course, I mean NASA, Russia, and US business venture.
I don’t know whether I just wasn’t as invested or if the show is toning down but I felt that there were a lot fewer ups and downs on the emotional rollercoaster this season.
In other news, I’m pretty deep into a rewatch of Fringe and it remains lovely and bonkers. John Noble is a delight, of course. but I really enjoy the rest of the cast too. Great chemistry, great characters, and good acting. Is this the first modern show that went hard on making all of their actors play multiple versions of themselves (like, all the time)? Maybe!
