07/22/24: When is old?
Today is my birthday; 52. I don’t feel significantly different than I did last year or the year before.
Average lifespan for an American male is 89 so, if we break life down into quarters, I’m two years shy of halfway through the third. Not bad, not good. Just the passage of time.
I don’t know. I don’t have much else to say about it. I don’t feel old.
Moving on: A few weeks ago I read Prayer for the Crown Shy by Becky Chambers. I liked it and the first book in the series A Psalm for the Wild-Built. They are about a monk who travels around making tea (kind of therapeutically) who meets a robot. They are quiet and contemplative books.
A lot of folks, I’ve seen, really like Chambers’s The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet which, frankly, I found largely uninteresting. That’s cool. I don’t have to like everything that other folks like; I just can’t recommend it.
I’ve recently been reading Lake of Souls by Ann Leckie which is a short story collection. I’ve really enjoyed her novels so, despite my track record with short stories, I picked it up from the library. The stories are good but most of them require knowledge of her novels. Not a problem for me but I recommend you check them out before reading the short stories. Ancillary Justice is a great place to start.
Oh! And Hey! We also adopted a new kitten. Winona is an adorable little pocket-panther. She’s very rambunctious and she’s well on her way to making friends with Bean and Nox.
