J-Fish Toyosu price update — week ending May 31

In the week ending May 31, 2026, compared with the previous week, right-eye flounder had significant movement, likely tied to reduced supply.

The price per kg rose from ¥429/kg to ¥501/kg (+16.8%), while weekly volume fell from 92,598 kg to 74,347 kg (-19.7%). This category (karei in Japanese) covers a range of right eye flounder species, so the price change may be influenced to some degree by product mix.

While some species are lacking enough consistent data to draw firm conclusions, sufficient data exists to draw a correlation between price and supply for flathead flounder (akagarei). In the chart below, when flathead flounder volume rises, price generally weakens; when volume drops sharply, price jumps. The early-January spike is especially obvious, as is the similar recent spike.
