HMVC october update + art practice stuff
Howdy!!
Starting with my laziest section, heres an email i just sent out through the HMVC newsletter (sign up if you’re interested!): https://buttondown.com/HMVC/archive/october-update-deadline-extension/
TLDR; Deadline extended till October 31st, release on November 15th. Looking for vjays and musicians for a live video art night. Tutorial library submissions opening at some point in November.
As for my practice:
I have been absolutely swamped by thesis work!!! Who knew writing ethics methodologies was so deceptively complicated! (I did). I’ve been dealing with so much of the research I’ve barely had time to do anything for myself besides read and make concepts.
For the reading side of things, I’ve been stuck at the start of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, which i had picked up in the summer after deeply enjoying her recent essay The Serviceberry (give it a read its only like a hundred pages long in big font!). On the thesis research side of things I’ve been buried deep in Abject Studies classics like Kristeva’s Powers of Horror (a great read but god does Kristeva love Freud) and Imogen Tyler’s writings on Social Abjection (which i believe can be found mostly within Revolting Subjects). Hoping to read In Praise of Shadows shortly aswell!
The artmaking side of things has been a whole lot of sketching and also of course the ever present TTRPG work (which truly never ends). I’m hoping to build a sandbox to begin practicing hammered metal relief-making in the coming weeks, and I’m researching methods for miniature making in the future! I also have a side project on its way called Office, i’ll leave you all here with its concept card transcribed to be seen:
a small wooden structure with open sides, a roof, a desk and an adjustable seat or an office chair. Set up in public and outdoor spaces without permission. The artist sits inside and works. In some iterations a chair is left outside the structure, inviting people to sit and meet with the artist. The entire structure is flat packed and includes power and shut-able waterproof curtains to ensure the work can continue for a full workday regardless of conditions or requirements. The structure uses a simple tongue and groove flat packed structure and an included dolly to allow for rapid setup and teardown.
