#10 Tracing the Threads of Yoga - talks now online
Hello subscribers. Hope you had a good summer. I am sharing some recent yoga studies talks below (including one of mine). I’m also very excited about starting a PhD at Kings College London in a few weeks to explore the relationship between inner speech and meditation in yogic and Buddhist traditions. I look forward to being even more connected into the world of yoga scholarship and also being able to share that with you!
Conference now online: "Tracing the Threads of Yoga"
A few weeks ago I took part in the 2025 Yoga Darśana Yoga Sādhana (YDYS) online conference, a collaborative event hosted by YDYS, yogaresearch.org, and Arihanta Institute with the theme "Tracing the Threads of Yoga". I was in fantastic company, with a wonderful line up of scholars discussing a range of yoga subjects, both historic and contemporary, with an eye on practice as well as research. I’m pleased to share that the videos are now available online for free at https://2025ydys.arihantainstitute.org/agenda.
My panel was the very last, on the final day. I was discussing quite a personal subject: the process of “destabilisation” as a result of studying yoga academically when coming from a practice background and what I’ve learnt from trying to navigate that, especially through the workshops and yoga studies book club that I run.
You can watch my talk if you go to the August 10th tab, and there is a separate video for the Q&A afterwards, where we had some great discussions and feedback. It seemed to strike a chord, so I will keep on with this this research in future.
Yoga in the Age of Overload: event
The SOAS Centre of Yoga Studies and the British Wheel of Yoga have announced a second annual summit. This time on a theme that may feel resonant to some: “In today’s Age of Overload, we are drowning in data – hyperconnected yet experiencing an epidemic of loneliness. As we strive for health, balance and longevity in a rapidly changing world, we ask: can the ancient traditions of yoga and Ayurveda meaningfully support modern minds?”
It takes place on the 1st November at SOAS in London and online, £65 for an in-person ticket, £35 for the online ticket. You can book here (you need to register for a free BWY account first) https://portal.bwy.org.uk/user/events/996
Happy studies!
As ever, please do encourage others to subscribe if you think they would be interested in the world of yoga scholarship. And if you are keen to be part of a workshop on any aspect of this subject, let me know and I will see if it is something I can arrange (especially on the Isle of Wight)
Best wishes, Martha @ IntoYoga
