#6 Free yoga studies talks and an introduction to the yoga sutra

An abundance of yoga content for you today! Some recordings of brilliant past events and an upcoming conference that promises to be really interesting. All free.

Plus, I will be running an Introduction to the Yoga Sutra event on the island in October, details at the end.

Yogic Studies Yogavidyā Conference 2024

Seth Powell’s Yogic Studies has been a major force in making scholarship more widely available, and his podcasts are a great way to hear more from those working in the field about their research as well as personal views and experiences.

This October 11th-13th Yogic Studies is offering an online conference entirely for free, and the line-up looks great. In many cases speakers appear to be presenting new findings or new talks that haven’t appeared elsewhere. Find out more and register at https://www.yogicstudies.com/yogavidya-2024.

The Yoga Studies Symposium: Celebrating 20 Years of Academic Engagement

Back in June, Lucy May Constantini and Daniela Bevilacqua put together this wonderful two days of sessions that invited the authors of seminal works in yoga studies to discuss their book and another scholar to respond to it. You can now watch the whole thing in this YouTube playlist. (I had a little supporting role, so you may see me pop up).

There were so many fascinating sessions, but I particularly enjoyed (and was moved by) the great Joseph Alter responding to Daniela’s new book “From Tapas to Modern Yoga”, and Shameem Black on her “Flexible India: Yoga's Cultural and Political Tensions”.

Yoga Darśana, Yoga Sādhana - talk by James Mallinson

If you missed this via my previous newsletter, you have another chance to watch James Mallinson discussing "Inverted Postures and the Realignment of Yogic Practice c. 1000 CE" at the Yoga Darśana, Yoga Sādhana (YDYS) conference in Hamburg this May.

You can find the recording here:
https://lecture2go.uni-hamburg.de/l2go/-/get/v/69285.
The handout with the texts used by Jim is available here.

It looks like the paper I gave with Ruth McNeil at the same conference will be published in their upcoming proceedings journal (but given academic timescales, that could be a long time away and we still have to write it, of course)! It was a fantastic event, lots of amazing speakers and talks, so I hope that the proceedings will share more of it as it doesn’t look like any other recordings will be made live.

The next in person YDYS conference won’t be until 2026 but I hear they are considering an online event next summer, watch this space!
