#4 Reminder! The History of Yoga event and Hamburg conference

Dear subscribers,

A reminder and some other yoga news below!

The History of Yoga with Professor James Mallinson

Monkton Arts in Ryde.

Don't forget, this Monday 15th April: a chance to hear and ask questions about the perhaps surprising history of yoga from one of the world's leading experts in this relaxed Q&A. Yoga is often claimed to be thousands of years old. However, the evidence suggests that the history is much more complex, with an earlier focus on meditative practices leading to liberation. Postures or asana seem to appear much later. We'll hear all about it from James Mallinson, along with tales from his two lives, one in India living with ascetics, and one in academia in the UK studying sanskrit texts.

Tickets are £10 each, book here https://checkout.square.site/merchant/5WVAC22MY7BZG/checkout/77HE6RQBCULRNJJI7PT7GVZ3.

As a reminder, here are the event details:

James Mallinson is the co-author of The Roots of Yoga and one of the world's leading experts on the history of yoga. Currently Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, Mallinson previously spent many months every year living as a Sadhu and has been ordained as a Mahant of the Terah Bhai Tyagi suborder of the Ramanandi Sampradaya, the only Westerner to receive this honour. Back in the UK, he was leading groundbreaking research into early haṭha yoga texts such as the Amṛtasiddhi as part of the Haṭha Yoga Project at SOAS University.

In this audience with Mallinson we will hear about his first trips to India and his early research, his findings from working on translations and studies of these fascinating haṭha yoga texts, and what it has been like to be part of a movement in yoga studies that has transformed our understanding of the history of yoga practice and philosophy.

This is not only for yoga experts! The event will be relaxed and aimed at anyone with an interest in yoga, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Find out more about James Mallinson at https://www.ames.ox.ac.uk/people/james-mallinson. The event will be chaired by (me!) Martha Henson of IntoYoga.

Yoga conference in Hamburg

Very excited to be attending and presenting two papers at the Yoga Darsana Yoga Sadhana conference in Hamburg in May. The last iteration of this event in Krakow 2022 was absolutely brilliant, fun and fascinating. If you have an interest in hearing the latest research on yoga studies I highly recommend coming along.

In their own words:
The Yoga Darśana, Yoga Sādhana (YDYS) conference series serves as a platform for the critical examination and dynamic discussion of recent advancements in the field of Yoga Studies. Following the success of the previous conferences in 2016 and 2022 (at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland), this upcoming event promises to build upon those achievements.

Find out more and register at https://www.conferences.uni-hamburg.de/event/350/

(We have found it is possible to get to Hamburg by train, if you prefer not to fly!)
