The History of Yoga with Professor James Mallinson

Very pleased to be announcing this event with James Mallinson, co-author of The Roots of Yoga and one of the world's leading experts on the history of yoga. Currently Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University, Mallinson previously spent many months every year living as a Sadhu and has been ordained as a Mahant of the Terah Bhai Tyagi suborder of the Ramanandi Sampradaya, the only Westerner to receive this honour. Back in the UK, he was leading groundbreaking research into early haṭha yoga texts such as the Amṛtasiddhi as part of the Haṭha Yoga Project at SOAS University.

In this audience with Mallinson we will hear about his first trips to India and his early research, his findings from working on translations and studies of these fascinating haṭha yoga texts, and what it has been like to be part of a movement in yoga studies that has transformed our understanding of the history of yoga practice and philosophy.

This is not only for yoga experts! The event will be relaxed and aimed at anyone with an interest in yoga, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Find out more about James Mallinson at https://www.ames.ox.ac.uk/people/james-mallinson. The event will be chaired by (me!) Martha Henson of IntoYoga.
