#1 Upcoming Event: The History of Yoga with Professor James Mallinson
Wishing a lovely weekend to my small band of Isle of Wight based yoga studies subscribers. In this first newsletter I am absolutely thrilled to announce a "save the date" for an upcoming event that I think you are going to really enjoy, see below.
15th April: The History of Yoga with Professor James Mallinson
Please save the date! Time and venue TBC but will be in the evening and in the East Wight.
James Mallinson is one of the world's leading experts on the history of yoga: a renowned author and Professor of Sanskrit at Oxford University who spent many months every year living as a Sadhu, and has been ordained as a Mahant of the Terah Bhai Tyagi suborder of the Ramanandi Sampradaya, the only Westerner to receive this honour.
In this audience with Professor Mallinson we will hear about his first trips to India and his early research, his translations and studies of haṭha yoga texts, and the way that recent findings have transformed our understanding of the history of yoga practice and philosophy.
This is not just for yoga experts! The event will be relaxed and aimed at anyone with an interest in yoga, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
Find out more about James Mallinson at https://www.ames.ox.ac.uk/people/james-mallinson. The event will be chaired by Martha Henson of IntoYoga.
James is a fascinating speaker and very engaging as well as hugely expert in this area. Those of us doing the IntoYoga Yoga Sutra Book Club will know that I have often referred to his (and Mark Singleton's) translations in The Roots of Yoga. He was chair of the Centre of Yoga Studies at SOAS (where I became the project co-ordinator) whilst he was Principal Investigator at the Hatha Yoga Project and lecturer in Sanskrit and Classical Indian Studies.
This will be a Q&A between the two of us and then there will be rare opportunity to ask him questions directly.
Please do pass this on to anyone else who you think will be interested and suggest they sign up to this newsletter to be the first to hear about booking. This will also help me gauge interest and size of venue. I look forward to seeing you there for some good yoga discussion!
