Celebrating John Coltrane's 100th birthday with the best of our local Jazz scene

When putting together shows to celebrate the 100th birthday of John Coltrane, we knew that we wanted to focus on our local scene. The Vancouver scene thrives when it's being driven by local talent, and we've put together 8 concerts by musicians from this part of the world to pay tribute to one of the most important Jazz musicians that ever lived.

The biggest Coltrane show of the month is one of our most ambitious projects ever, featuring an 18 person string orchestra playing the music of Coltrane! This amazing event is spearheaded by Ardeshir Pourkeramati, who is arranging all of the charts just for this event. This show is so big we had to do two different seatings.

Late-period Coltrane is often overlooked when discussing the great man's work, but that's what we'll be focussing on on September 18 with a very special improvised performance by 6 of Vancouver's most exciting musicians: Feven Kidane, Nebyu Yohannes, Gordy Li, Brian Horswill, Clyde Reed & Kenton Loewen.

Victoria's Ryan Oliver is one of Canada's most acclaimed saxophonists, known for his work with the Shuffle Demons & Dee Daniels, and for his Juno nomination. He'll be coming to Vancouver for three very special performances, all focusing on different aspects of Coltrane's legacy.

On September 24, Ryan will be at Hero's Welcome for our Social Music series for a show that we can only call: Cuba Meets Coltrane! This unique event pairs Coltrane's catalogue with Afro-Cuban rhythms!

Ryan will be playing the music of John Coltrane at the VIFF Centre on September 25, paired with a special screening of Chasing Trane, a documentary about Coltrane's life & legacy.

Ryan will be at the Telus Studio Theatre at the Chan Centre on September 26, for the very first concert in a new monthly series that Infidels Jazz is launching there. He'll be playing the music of A Love Supreme in its entirety, along with other carefully chosen Coltrane work. This one is selling very quickly, and may sell out this week.

In addition, Dave Say will be playing the music of John Coltrane at Tyrant Studios on September 04 &  on September 25 the Jerry Steinhilber Trio with special guest Tal Cohen will be playing Frankie's.
