SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR OUR MUSLIM COMMUNITY!

In response to City of Spokane Valley Councilwoman Jessica Yaeger’s grotesque recent display of racism and Islamophobia, testimony and a show of support for our Muslim community members is planned for the Valley council meeting tomorrow.

I have shared information sent by our partners at MCAS (Muslims for Community Action and Support) about this action, as well as a flyer created by “Eastside Gladiators” and “Be the Change 509.”

Let’s show up in numbers and show our support!

Please Note: Out of respect for our Muslim community members’ dignity and safety, please follow the guidelines below for messaging on signs and verbalizations for a unified front of support and solidarity.

Muslims for Community Action & Support

Sun, Nov 23, 5:39 PM (1 day ago)

As-Salaam-o-Alaikum, dear Spokane Islamic Center Board and Community Members,
Many of you have seen recent news coverage in The Spokesman Review, KHQ, and other outlets regarding Spokane Valley Councilwoman Jessica Yeager publicly declaring
herself a “proud Islamophobe” and stating that Islam has “no place in Spokane Valley.”
While individuals are entitled to free speech, these comments—coming from an elected official—cross a line. They are irresponsible, unbecoming of public office, and
dangerous. Statements like these can create a hostile climate and place an unnecessary target on the backs of our Muslim community members.
We are asking our community to come together in unity and strength by attending the Spokane Valley City Council meeting this Tuesday, November 25th. Our presence matters. We need city leadership to see the vibrant, diverse Muslim community that lives, works, and contributes here—and to understand that bigotry has no place in our
city government.
Our ask:
 Arrive by 5:15 PM at Spokane Valley City Hall (10210 E Sprague Ave). The
meeting begins at 6:00 PM, but arriving early allows us time to organize and
support one another.
 We invite Muslim community members to sign up to give public comment (3 minutes). Speakers may share personal reflections, highlight values rooted in Islam (such as compassion, charity, justice, or community), or call for
accountability and a public apology.
 SIC Board members are strongly encouraged to attend, as your presence as faith leaders sends a powerful and unifying message.
 Some of our interfaith partners—including Pastor Genevive Heywood—will be present in solidarity with our community.
This is a moment for us to stand together and demonstrate that Spokane’s Muslim community is strong, visible, and deeply rooted here. We belong everywhere, and we certainly belong in Spokane Valley.
