Feel that brisk, crsip seasonal air whipping around your ears, friends? That's autumn. As all in the greater bear community know, autumn is a time for hunting, foraging and prepping your cave for the coming winter hibernation. And wouldn't you know it, but this is almost
the one year anniversary of the IMPORTANT BEAR NEWS newsletter. A lot has changed in this first year of IMPORTANT BEAR NEWS -- a lot more of you have come aboard this bear train, the Washington National Zoo's panda-in-residence had cubs [
RIP smaller cub] and Florida declared public war on its bear population [
WE SEE YOU FLORIDA. WE'RE WATCHING]. But what hasn't changed, in general, are the bears. Like always, they're out there, wanting to stumble upon
your afternoon picnic or
divebomb your birthday party because you forgot to invite them. [Don't be rude, readers.
Always. Invite. Bears.] And they are always here, in this newsletter, providing you with a brief spot of honey in your afternoon so you can get through the day and get back home to your own bear den. Thanks for reading, for following
@ImportBearNews and for telling your friends to
subscribe. And now...TO THE BEARS.

Grizzly bear [Ursus arctos horribilis], traditional name given to brown bears of North America. Grizzlies are massive animals with humped shoulders and an elevated forehead that contributes to a somewhat concave profile. The fur is brownish to buff, and the hairs are usually silver- or pale-tipped to give the grizzled effect for which they are named. Large adult grizzlies may be about 2.5 metres (8 feet) long and weigh about 410 kg (900 pounds). The Kodiak bear is the largest living land carnivore and may attain a length of more than 3 metres and a weight of 780 kg.
food: Omnivorous animals, grizzlies feed on berries, plant roots and shoots, small mammals, fish, calves of many hoofed animals, and carrion. Food is often cached in shallow holes, and grizzlies dig readily and vigorously in search of rodents.
habitat: Grizzlies once ranged through forested and open regions of western North America from Alaska to Mexico.Grizzlies remain numerous in Alaska and Canada, where they continue to be highly prized as big game. In the continental United States, however, less than 1,000 remain, and they are protected by law.
